March 11, 2016: Puerto Balandra. Overnight was calm through sunrise. Our departure was slightly delayed as our anchor snagged a submerged shrub-like object but was otherwise without incident.
We motorsailed 26 miles northward in calm seas to Caleta San Juanico. En route, we spotted one sea lion, four dolphin, and about a dozen small sportfishers. All was well until we entered the bay, when the wind backed to the southeast and increased to the mid-teens with gusts to 18 knots. The southeast breeze made us pay attention as the main San Juanico anchorage is totally exposed to the southeast, but we anchored without incident in 21 feet in the Caleta's north lobe among catamaran Slow Mocean and sailing vessels Happy Dance, Barbara Ann, Sea Dancer, Perla, and one other.
(That's us over there on the right. Caleta San Juanico is famous for its rocky bits. Clever angles make good pics.)
We saw southeast gusts to 18 knots until about 7PM, but then turned to the normal north-northwest direction at about 5-10 knots. The next morning was clear and calm, especially so up to 9:30AM. Perfect conditions for GB to take a hike on shore, and for me to get some hardcore seashelling accomplished.
And so the days progressed….
